Dress Code

Smyrna School of Ballet, like many private schools, adheres to a traditional dress code. It is an important part of the tradition and etiquette of ballet, building self-esteem, discipline and class unity, or "esprit de corps." The dress code also allows the instructor to see and correct mistakes easily.

A professional appearance is to be maintained throughout the school. No jewelry is permitted besides small earrings. Any other type of jewelry could be a hazard or distraction while dancing. No chewing gum or food is allowed int he studio. Please turn off cell phones while in class.

Any student not adhering to the dress code will be asked to leave class or may be allowed to watch class at the instructor's discretion. Dance shoes should never be worn outside. Adult classes are open, which means an adult may elect to take as many, or as few a number of classes as desired per week.

Helpful Hints

Students need to have their names written inside their shoes and dancewear.

Barrettes can help control short hair on the sides of the face, along with hairspray and bobby pins.

To make a classical bun: brush hair into a ponytail and secure tightly with a hair elastic. Twist the ponytail and begin to insert hair pins (the open ended U shaped pins) at the base of the ponytail as you twist the hair onto the head. Continue inserting hair pins along the bun that is forming until you run out of ponytail. This can take up to 20-30 pins if hair is elbow length. The more pins, the better! Then double a hair net over (they are generally quite large) and place it over the bun, twisting it under the edge of the bun. Insert more hair pins to hold the hair net on. Bobby pins are great to hold back "whispies."

Hair that is not secured properly can be a hazard to the dancer. Loose hair can hit the cornea and scratch the eye, plus a dancer needs to be able to "spot" properly when turning. The instructor also needs to be able to see the alignment of the neck and head to assure proper body placement.

Punctuality

Promptness is crucial in development of each students' mental and physical progression. It also plays a large factor in the respect level of their peers. All students need to arrive 5-10 minutes before class time to insure readiness for class.

The most important part of the warm-up is achieved during the beginning of class. Therefore, missing the warm-up is dangerous for the student while entering the class late is disruptive to the class.

Students arriving 10 minutes late may be asked to sit and watch the class.

Recital

Performing experience is one of the most fun and valuable parts of dance training. We hold an annual spring-time dance recital culminating the school season. We do not charge an admission to our recital, but we do assess each family a recital fee.

The recital fee covers the venue rental and professional production costs. This amount is due by November 30th. Costumes are ordered in December to insure delivery by recital dates, so it is imperative fees be received by the first. Participation in the recital is contingent upon all fees being paid and all accounts being current.

Attendance at the dress rehearsal is absolutely necessary to insure a good performance. We encourage parents to take pictures and videos at the dress rehearsal as photographic equipment is not allowed during our recital. A professional will tape the performance and you may pre-order Dvds at the studio.
