Ballet School Etiquette

Dancers show respect for themselves by:

  • Being prompt for class.
  • Dressing properly for class, without underpants under leotards, leaving jewelry off (small earrings are allowed), and shoe strings are tied in a double knot then cut off.
  • Elastics are sewn on ballet slippers.
  • Dancewear is clean and tights are run-free.
  • Hair is up in a classical bun. If too short for a bun, pinned back on both sides out of the eyes and off the neck.

Dancers show respect for others by:

  • Keeping their hands to themselves in class.
  • Waiting quietly for others to have their turn.
  • Waiting until the music is finished before entering the studio.
  • Talking only during share time, or when spoken to by the instructor.
  • Raising their hand when they have a question.
  • Refraining from touching any item that does not belong to them.

Dancers show respect for their teacher and the art form they are learning by:

  • Being properly dressed and ready for class on time.
  • Listening when the teacher speaks.
  • When sitting on the floor, sitting with a tall back, legs crossed and hands in their lap.
  • Being prepared for their turn.
  • Always asking permission before leaving the classroom for any reason.
  • Reversing combinations and being ready to do the other side after mastering the first side.
  • Applauding their teacher at the end of class.

Dancers show respect for the studio by:

  • Leaving gum, food, or drink outside.
  • Never hanging on the bars.
  • Never running or doing gymnastics in the studio or lobby.
  • Putting trash in the trash can.
  • Putting away books and magazines when they are finished with them.
  • Treating the lobby with respect.
  • Always wearing something over their ballet clothes when entering and leaving the building.
  • Never wearing their dance shoes outside.

Parents show respect for dancers, teachers, and the studio by:

  • Knocking before entering the classroom if a class is in progress.
  • Standing away from the viewing door if it becomes obvious the students are becoming distracted.
  • Having students ready for class on time.
  • Picking up students promptly after class.
  • Watching over their children while waiting in the lobby, not allowing them to hit the glass doors.
  • Ensuring their children know and understand the school rules.

The studio shows respect for dancers and parents by:

  • Maintaining a positive learning environment promoting achievement.
  • Providing students with highly qualified instructors dedicated to their art.
  • Starting and ending classes on time.
  • Providing educational updates.
  • Providing current school information.
  • Providing state of the art sprung floors to prevent injuries.
  • Keeping the studio neat and clean.
  • Setting a professional standard enabling the student to achieve his/her best.
  • Always treating parents and students with respect by listening to their questions and providing timely responses to their wants and needs.
